For me as a crossword lover, this question is really hilarious and at the same time, shows how social problems can be cleverly addressed in games to absorb the attention of players. Therefore, without any hesitation, let’s dive in to NYT Crossword Analysis of Jan 8, 2026.

Section 39A presents a weird question which is intertwined with four other riddles: College concern seen in 16-, 25-, 49- and 63-Across? Do not rush in to answer the four other riddles. The most important clue resides in the section 39A itself.

In 16A, the question is: Nonverbal “well done”. It is obvious that the answer would be highfive. But if you put this in the grid, the 4D section will be problematic. The answer for 4D is ADD and as you can see, there is no F in that word.

25-Across also poses a similar problem; Cars with retractable roofs Crossword Clue. As you have imagined, the answer must be Droptops; however, section 6D whose answer is CIVIC cannot be placed in the crossword. Similar issue is present for 49- and 63-Across sections.

As I mentioned earlier, the main clue is the College Concern seen in 16-, 25-, 49- and 63-Across question. Let me make it clear for you: the answer for 39A is GREADINFLATION. What is it? Grade inflation is the practice of giving higher grades for the same quality of work over time, which makes grades less meaningful and misrepresents academic performance.

So, you have the pattern: Each theme answer includes a letter grade, which is then raised by one level to form another familiar phrase that is placed in the grid.

For instance, answer for 16A in the crossword is HIGEDIVE, a higher mark than F. Or for 25D, answer is CROPTOPS as C is better than D (on exam paper of course). 49D “true” answer is Overcook, but because of the “Grade Inflation”, it should be written as OVERBOOK. For 63A, I won’t help you; OK, the answer is ALISTERS (instead of Blisters).

The beauty of today’s puzzle is how the “wrong” answers actually teach you the theme. Once you realize that a High Five is actually a High Dive because of academic pressure, the rest of the grid falls into place!

What do you think about today’s NYT Crossword? Did you find this “Grade Inflation” theme as amusing and clever as I did, or was it a bit too tricky?
