We all love newborn babies and are overjoyed to see them taking their first steps. Eventually, these little ones grow and start their own journeys. At some point, they may decide to leave the nest and walk their own path.

Today’s crossword aptly depicts this journey and reminds us of the ups and downs of life. From a tiny creature at the start to a complete form in its prime, this puzzle demonstrates the process of growing up. Let me be your guide for today’s grid as we fly as high as we can!

Section 21-Across is the first step: “Far from any urban center, colloquially.” The answer is INTHESTICKS (In The Sticks). At this stage, the whole world of our little baby (or little bird, given the 54-Across revealer) is their toys and home. They don’t care about the outside world, trying only to experience everything and to have fun.

The 33-Across clue occurs when the little baby is grown enough to face the reality of life: Potentially at risk, metaphorically. The child or bird discovers life is not that easy and they should be prepared for everything, the child is OUTONALIMB (Out On a Limb). In this phase, they fail, win, suffer and rejoice; life shows its real face. In fact, it is “the unbearable lightness of being.”.

The 41-Across is the prime time; our child or bird with a bag full of experiences finds its place in the world and strives for prosperity: “In a soaring mood, so to speak.” They are FLYINGHIGH (Flying High) in the clouds, enjoying little things and dreaming big for the future.

You may also like: NYT Crossword Analysis (Jan 26, 2026): Find Pete in the Grid!

During this journey, we should not forget the real power behind the little child or bird: Parent or parents who support their children unconditionally. Section 53-Across accurately reminds us of their sacrifice: “Metaphor for a parent whose youngest has “launched” … like the little bird whose progress is suggested by 21-, 33- and 41-Across.” The answer is EMPTYNESTER (Empty Nester).

P.S. The title of this analysis is a nod to the Lynyrd Skynyrd masterpiece, Free Bird. Additionally, The Unbearable Lightness of Being is a famous novel by Milan Kundera, later adapted into a film starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Juliette Binoche.

What did you think of today’s theme?
