If you are not sure what to do today, I can make a suggestion (if I may, of course). If you are in the mood, solve the NYT Crossword of Feb 14 with the person you love because it is designed with some subtle nods to Valentine’s Day (check out that big heart shape at the center of the grid!).

As you know, the Saturday version of the puzzle has no theme, but I am here to find the tricky clues for you. Before reading this NYT Crossword analysis Feb 14, make sure you have checked the grid, since it will be spoiled for you.

Tricky Clues of NYT Crossword of Feb 14

The Valentine-related clue of the grid comes at 12-Across: “Features of many romantic dramas.” I was thinking about the main elements of romantic scenarios, but I couldn’t reach a final answer. With the help of crossing entries, I finally solved the clue with LOVE TRIANGLE.

32-Across (Arrive suddenly and from a distance, metaphorically) is one of those clues that I hate. It uses a metaphor for its answer and you have to do some (excessive) deep thinking to solve it. By the way, the answer is PARACHUTE IN.

In plain terms, 17-Down (Honorific meaning “elder brother”) was a pain in the neck. I was not familiar with the term until I searched for it. AGHA is a term of respect in some cultures meaning “elder brother” or a leader. These “cultural” terms are hard to reach and they are not in the everyday crosswordese.

53-Across posits wordplay with a TV show and an athlete: “One of the ‘Golden Girls’ of the 2024 Summer Olympics.” This clue solves to SIMONE BILES, the American gymnast with 11 Olympic medals!

1-Across (It’s made with two fingers) is a misleading clue that may annoy you at first, but the answer is much easier than you think. This clue solves to PEACE SIGN, something we really need in today’s world.

Facts of NYT Crossword of Feb 14

The puzzle features a 15×15 grid with no rebus squares. It uses 21 of the 26 letters and excludes F, J, Q, Y, and Z. Moreover, it follows a mirror symmetry pattern. The unique words of the puzzle are GTG, REMOTE WORKERS, SANTA PHOTOS, and TAKES A BET.

Whether you were stumped by AGHA or sailed through the LOVE TRIANGLE, I want to hear about your Saturday experience! Was the heart-shaped grid a “sweet” surprise or a “salty” distraction?
