It is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Moreover, this day serves as a call to action for gender equality.

In a fitting tribute, the NYT Crossword for March 8, 2026, centers its entire theme on this celebration. Sunday puzzles are known for their “grid-spanning” ambition and today is no exception. The constructor has woven the history and spirit of International Women’s Day into the very fabric of the white and black squares.

In this NYT Crossword Analysis March 8, I will delve into the theme of the grid to find the names of some women whom history will never forget!

NYT Crossword Analysis March 8: Theme

First of all, 71-Across caught my attention (since I scan the whole grid and clues really fast). The clue reads: March 8 observance connecting billions of people around the world … including the 22 people whose names cross this answer.

Seeing words like “March 8” and “people,” I suddenly realized that it might be about IWD. I tried answering the clue with INTERNATIONALWOMENSDAY and to no surprise, that was correct!

The astonishing part of the clue comes in the second section: 22 people whose names cross this answer. After several minutes of “fighting” with the grid, I found all the names of women who are literally part of IWD (both in the grid and the factual world). In the following section, I will just name some of them, because I don’t want to ruin the joy of finding every name for yourself!

Women in the Grid!

73-Down (Singer and civil rights activist Simone) is about a woman of many arts: NINA Simone. To be precise, she was a pianist, singer, songwriter, and civil rights activist. If you haven’t already, listen to her rendition of “I Put a Spell on You” without hesitation!

For lovers of Hogwarts and the magical world of the Harry Potter series, EMMA WATSON is a familiar name. She made herself immortal by playing Hermione Granger. Fittingly, her name is also the answer for 31-Down (Actress who portrayed Hermione Granger).

The author of Beloved and The Bluest Eye is the answer for 45-Down (Author who won a Pulitzer for “Beloved”), which solves to TONI MORRISON. In 1993, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. She is undoubtedly one of the greatest writers of the 20th century.

47-Down was the hardest clue for me because I hadn’t heard of the First (and last) queen of Hawaii. I looked up the answer on Daze Puzzle and arrived at LILIUOKALANI.

Today’s grid is exactly what a Sunday puzzle should be: ambitious, deeply meaningful and packed with “Aha!” moments. The constructor’s ability to cross 22 iconic women with INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY is nothing short of spectacular, a solve I won’t soon forget.

How long did it take you to find all the women in the grid?
