Do you hate to waste your time in a row? For example, imagine a new iPhone has been released and you want to be the first one to buy it. But, there is a catch here; every iPhone lover wants to be the first one to get their hands on the new Apple phone. Therefore, a lengthy row of buyers forms alongside the street.

You may ask why I started NYT Crossword analysis of Jan 29 with a topic related to row? The answer will be obvious if you solve today’s puzzle. If not, then let me explain to you the theme of the crossword. Everyone get in a row, show is on!

Everything starts with section 20-Across: “Expand.” The answer is GGGGGGGGGGGGGGG. If you are surprised, wait for the other clues. 37-Across (Sadness) and 52-Across (Day after today) solve to SORSORSORSORSOR and TOMORTOMORTOMOR, respectively.

You may ask yourself what is going on here? Take a look at the introductory section of the analysis. Did you get the hint? Ok, let me help you. look at the repeated elements, it seems that they are in a ROW. In fact, they are placed in a row indeed. Now, take the word “row”. We need it for the big revelation.

Let’s head back to the clues. All the Gs are in a row; they can be named g-row or Grow. Section 37-Across is read as Sor+Row or simply Sorrow. At the end, we have Tomor+Row or Tomorrow (which never dies). To get the actual answer, you need to take the letter(s) in the grid and add the word “ROW” to them. Now the introduction makes sense; everything in this grid depends on being in a row!
