Brain Test 2: Tricky Stories is the sequel that changed the structure. Same trick puzzles, but grouped into story chapters instead of one endless numbered run. 

That change does more to the gameplay than it sounds like it should.

Brain Test 2 Chapter System

Each chapter follows one character through a loose narrative, typically around 20 levels. The game launched with a core set built around Tom the cat, Emily, Joe, Sam and a monster-hunting arc, and Unico has added more through updates since. It includes Eddie’s Revenge, a McBrain family story, and a Smith and Joe chapter that runs 30 levels rather than 20.

Chapter length isn’t uniform, so don’t assume a 20-level block when you’re planning a session.

Chapter Structure of Brain Test 2

Three things genuinely change:

• Character personality functions as a hint system. Joe works a farm, so his puzzles resolve with farm tools, animals and weather. Tom is clumsy, so his levels tend to involve cleaning up a mess he’s made. Emily’s are systematic and lean on logic. Knowing whose chapter you’re in narrows the solution space before you’ve touched anything.
• An object you picked up in level 3 can matter in level 12 of the same chapter. The original game never did this. Every level was hermetically sealed.
• Multi-step solutions have become the norm. Brain Test 2 has far more puzzles requiring two or three sequential interactions than the original. If an action produces a small visible change rather than a win, you’re probably on step one, not on the wrong track. This is the single most useful thing to know going in.

Difficulty Resets Every Chapter

Chapter 3 level 1 is easier than chapter 2 level 20. The curve restarts each time a new character takes over.

That makes Brain Test 2 the most forgiving entry to play in short bursts. You can put it down for a month, start a fresh chapter and be eased back in. It also means it never builds the sustained pressure that makes the original memorable. Which of those you prefer is genuinely a matter of taste.

Is it harder than Brain Test 1?

On average, slightly. The multi-step chains and narrative context add layers. But the hardest individual puzzles in the two games are comparable, and no stretch of Brain Test 2 is as relentless as the original’s unbroken 500-level climb.

Do you need to play Brain Test 1 first?

No. It teaches its own mechanics from scratch. That said, players arriving from the original will find the opening levels of every chapter noticeably soft, because the lateral-thinking habit is already trained.

Who this is for?

Two groups. People who bounced off Brain Test 1’s difficulty ramp and want the same puzzles with breathing room. And people who found the original’s total lack of context a bit sterile.The characters here are genuinely charming and the writing carries several chapters that the puzzles alone wouldn’t.
