What time does the NYT Crossword come out?

NYT Crossword drops the evening before its official date. This is a tradition from the print era, timed to match when the first editions of the newspaper hit the streets in New York. From Monday to Friday, the digital version of the crossword is released at 10:00 PM (Eastern Time). On Saturday and Sunday, it will be published at 6:00 PM.

What is the grid size of the NYT Crossword?

The size of the puzzle changes depending on the day of the week. This affects the number of clues and the overall time it takes to solve.

Daily (Monday – Saturday):

  • Size: 15 by 15 squares.
  • Average Clues: Around 70-78 clues.
  • Fact: These grids must follow “Rotational Symmetry,” meaning the pattern of black squares looks the same if you turn it 180°.

Sunday:

  • Size: 21 by 21 squares.
  • Average Clues: Around 140 clues.
  • Fact: The Sunday puzzle is much larger but is usually only medium in difficulty (similar to a Wednesday or Thursday).

The most important thing to know is that the NYT Crossword follows a weekly calendar of difficulty; on Monday the easiest version of the crossword is published. But on Saturday, players face the most difficult one. On Sunday, the grid size is larger; however, the difficulty will be medium.
