NYT Connections Tips and Strategy

The best way to solve NYT Connections is to look for the most specific category rather than a broad theme and always verify that removing those four words still leaves logical groups behind. If you find five words that seem related, one is usually a red herring, so identify which word fits another category instead.

Keep in mind that not every group is based on meaning.

Many puzzles rely on wordplay. Words with multiple meanings can also create misleading groups, so avoid locking them in too early.

If you get stuck, use the Shuffle button to break visual patterns and reveal new connections. The yellow group is usually the easiest, while the purple group often requires language-based tricks. Therefore, try adding the same word before or after each answer, reading words aloud or looking for hidden patterns.

GreenModerateA recognizable category with slightly more ambiguity
BlueDifficultOften requires specific knowledge or a less obvious connection
PurpleHardestFrequently involves wordplay, hidden patterns, missing words, prefixes, suffixes, or misleading meanings

The hints provide useful direction and you can find the answers very easily. You can click on each word (Show word button in Reveal Assistant section) to reveal that one specific item to avoid spoilers. All the words are color-coded.

NYT Connections Trap Map: A Problem We All Face

Today’s Trap Map identifies the most convincing false group and explains how to avoid it. In other words, which word or words actually belong elsewhere and what clue reveals the intended solution.

Use this rule: Do not describe every possible overlap. Focus only on a false connection that could realistically cause a player to submit the wrong four words.

Each Trap Map should answer three questions:

What is the trap?

  • List the words that appear to form a group.

Why is it convincing?

  • Explain the real relationship those words share.

How can the player escape it?

  • Show which word has a stronger place in another category and what evidence confirms the correct group.

A strong Trap Map teaches a reusable solving lesson instead of merely revealing that the group was wrong.
