Sudoku Core Rules: Anatomy of a Grid

Every sport has its foundational rules and Sudoku is no different. If you are just starting out, memorize the laws of the board. They are simple, but absolute:

  1. Use only the numbers 1 through 9.
  2. Every row must contain each number exactly once.
  3. Every column must contain each number exactly once.
  4. Every 3×3 block (the smaller grids) must contain each number exactly once.

One guiding principle: Good Sudoku needs no guessing. Every move should come from pure elimination and logic.

To solve the hardest grids, you need to continually upgrade your tactical arsenal. Progress through these skill levels to learn the board:

Beginner Tactics

Focus on the Last Free Cell. Scan rows, columns, and blocks that already have 8 numbers filled in. The missing 9th number is an automatic strike. Next, look for the Last Remaining Cell. If you know a 3×3 block needs a “7”, and intersecting rows/columns prevent a “7” from going anywhere except one specific square, you have found your target.

Last Free Cell Technique

This is your foundational move. The logic is absolute: because every 9-cell structure must contain the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once, if a row, column, or 3×3 block has eight numbers filled in, the ninth number must go in the remaining empty square.

You should always begin your solve by scanning for these complete structures. Here are three examples of how to apply this technique.

Example 1 – Last Free Cell in a Row

Look at the structure highlighted in the image below. When you scan row 3, you can see that it already contains the digits 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 9. We know from the fundamental Sudoku rules that every row must contain all nine numbers.

The only number missing from this sequence is 7. This allows us to fill in the highlighted cell instantly with a 7, completing the row as shown in the picture on the right.

Example 2 – Last Free Cell in a Column

The exact same principle applies vertically. As seen in the image, scanning down the highlighted column reveals eight placed numbers. Since 7 is the only digit left to complete the 1-through-9 sequence, it drops right into the single empty square..

Example 3 – Last Free Cell in a Box

Finally, this logic works within the smaller 3×3 grids. Take a look at the image. The isolated block is almost entirely full, containing every digit except one. With 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 9 already locked in, the final open space automatically defaults to a 7.

Last Remaining Cell Technique

For this tactic, you focus on a single 3×3 block to see where a specific number must go. If you know a block needs a certain number, and intersecting rows or columns prevent it from going anywhere except one specific square, you have found your target.

Example 4 – Let’s look at image to find the right spot for a 5 in the central block:

  • Vertical line (column): The 5 at the bottom of the grid acts as a wall and eliminates the entire left column of the center block.
  • Horizontal line (row): The 5 on the right side also blocks the bottom row of the center block.
  • Process of Elimination: The yellow lines highlight these blocked paths. Inside the center block, the digits 2, 3, and 4 are already placed.

Because all other empty spaces are either blocked by the intersecting 5s or already full, there is exactly one legal spot left. The highlighted orange square is the last remaining option, so that is where your 5 belongs!

Last Possible Number Technique

Sometimes, you need to reverse your thinking. Instead of looking for where a specific number can go, focus on just one empty square to see what numbers are not allowed. If eight different numbers are already in the same row, column, and block as that square, the final missing number is your answer.

Example 5 – Consider the orange square in the image:

  • Inside its block: The numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are already placed.
  • Across its row: It shares a row with a 6 and a 7.
  • Down its column: It shares a column with an 8.

When you look at all of these together, the numbers 1 through 8 all “see” this one single cell. Because no guessing is allowed, the only possible number left for that square is 9. You can confidently fill it in!

Intermediate Tactics

It is time to start learning Pencil Notes. Try marking every legal candidate inside each empty cell so the board’s hidden logic becomes visible. Once those notes are in place, two foundational patterns start to surface: the Naked Single and the Hidden Single. The examples below show each one in action.

Naked Single

To spot this pattern, you need to use Pencil Notes. By writing down every possible number that can legally go into an empty cell, you will easily find Naked Singles. A Naked Single is simply a cell where only one number is mathematically possible.

Example 6 – Take a look at the image. The small numbers inside the squares show all the potential candidates. Notice the highlighted orange cell. Because of the numbers already existing in its row, column, and block, every other option has been crossed out.

The only small number left inside that square is a 6. Since no guessing is allowed and it is the only legal choice left, you can confidently lock in the 6!

Hidden Single

A Hidden Single is a number that can only go in one specific cell within a block, even if that cell has other candidates. You will need Pencil Notes to spot this pattern easily.

Example 7 – Let’s examine the image. Look closely at the small pencil notes inside the right-side block. The highlighted orange square shows a few different possible numbers. However, if you scan the notes in all the other empty squares of that same 3×3 grid, you will notice that the number 5 does not appear as an option anywhere else.

Because every block must contain a 5, and this is the absolute only square left that can hold it, you have found your Hidden Single. You can safely ignore the other small numbers in that square and confidently lock in your 5!

Advanced Tactics

Welcome to the deep end. To crack the hardest daily puzzles, you will need to recognize complex grid patterns. Techniques like Naked Pairs/Triples, X-Wings and the Swordfish involve spotting groups of numbers that mutually eliminate possibilities across multiple rows and columns at once.
