NYT Midi: The Puzzle That Sits in the Gap

The New York Times added the Midi to its Games lineup on 26 February 2026. The Mini is over in about a minute, the full Crossword can eat an evening, and the Midi lands in between. Puzzle editor Ian Livengood summed it up at launch: if the Mini isn’t enough but the Daily is too much, this is your puzzle.

The daily Midi is digital-only and does not appear in the printed newspaper.

The NYT Midi Bends a Few Rules

• Grids can be asymmetrical, sometimes shaped to fit the theme. A heart-shaped grid has already appeared.
• Two-letter answers are allowed. If a slot looks impossibly short, you probably haven’t misread the numbering.
• Answers can repeat inside one puzzle.
• Roughly once a week there’s a visual flourish, an animation or a wash of colour, when you open or finish the grid.
