Thursday versions of the NYT Crossword are notorious for their rebuses; I say “notorious” because a rebus is often a solver’s nightmare. Simply put, it is a special crossword element where a single square holds more than one letter, a symbol or even an image to represent a word, sound or part of a phrase.
Fortunately, today’s puzzle contains no rebus (rejoice, everyone!); that’s the good news. As you know, however, with all good news comes a bit of bad news: unfortunately, the NYT Crossword Feb 5 includes graphical elements in the clues that were really hard for me to crack until I found a “savior” hint.
Theme of NYT Crossword Feb 5
If you are having difficulty solving the grid, join me for this analysis of the Feb. 5 puzzle. I will review the theme clues one by one and share my findings with you.
First, let’s look at the not-so-straightforward revealer at 35-Across: “Classic Jack Kerouac novel … or where you’ll find 17-, 24-, 49- and 58-Across.” The answer is ON THE ROAD, which serves as the key for the other mentioned clues. I must admit, it is quite difficult to decipher the hint completely unless you solve some of the crossing “Down” entries first.

17-Across is the first theme clue: | $|$ | $|$ |. At first, it looked like the eyes of people who are greedy for money. With the help of a few entries, I found the answer is TOLL BOOTHS. The clue visually represents a row of toll booths you would see “on the road.”
24-Across is another symbol found “on the road”: |: : : | / /. If you keep the theme in mind, everything becomes clearer. This clue solves to FREEWAY EXIT; look at the “:” as the road lanes and the “//” as the off-ramp used to safely exit the freeway.
49-Across (| : : :–|) and 58-Across (|X:X:X:X| |X:X:X:X| |X:X:X:X|) are the final theme questions of the grid. These solve to LANE CLOSURE and TRAFFIC JAM, respectively. The latter is easily the most annoying thing you can encounter on the road (and no, I’m not talking about the novel!).
