NYT Wordle is the puzzle that started the current wave of daily word games. It is still one of the simplest: one word, six guesses, and no timer.
It has also changed since its early days. The New York Times owns it now, and some features sit behind a subscription. A 2026 rule update reshaped how answers work. Here is a full rundown of how to play, what is free, and what is new.
How to Play NYT Wordle
The rules have not changed since day one:
- Guess any five-letter word and hit enter.
- Check the color feedback. A green tile means that letter is correct and in the right spot. Yellow means the letter is in the word but in a different spot. Gray means the letter is not in the word.
- Use what you learn to narrow down your next guess.
- You get six tries. Solve it and your streak continues. Run out of guesses and the answer is revealed.
A few things trip people up. Letters can repeat within an answer, and the official word list tends to skip simple plurals ending in S, so do not assume every five-letter guess is a possible answer.
Is NYT Wordle Free?
Yes. The daily puzzle is free, with no login required to play. The subscription applies to features around the daily game:
- The Wordle Archive, which lets you play past puzzles, is limited to NYT Games and All Access subscribers.
- Full WordleBot analysis is mostly a subscriber feature. Free players still get a basic result summary, but not the full breakdown.
- Stat tracking and streaks sync across devices only when you are signed in to an NYT account. Without an account, progress is stored locally on your browser or device.
None of this affects the free daily puzzle. You can continue playing without a subscription.
NYT Wordle Hard Mode Explained
Hard Mode is a setting that adds one constraint: once a letter comes back green or yellow, you must use it in every later guess in a valid position. This removes the strategy of using an unrelated test word only to gather information about other letters.
In Hard Mode, every guess has to try to be the answer. It is a small change that makes the middle and final guesses noticeably tighter.
Tips for Solving NYT Wordle Faster
- Open with a word that covers common letters and at least one or two vowels. A balanced opening word gives you more information than a word filled with rare letters.
- Trust the gray letters. Once a letter is gray, it is not in the answer for that puzzle unless the guess contains a repeated letter.
- Remember that letters can repeat. If one slot remains and the obvious word does not work, try doubling a letter you have already confirmed.
- In Hard Mode, plan two guesses ahead. You cannot use a throwaway word to test new letters after green or yellow letters have been revealed.

NYT Wordle FAQ
Is NYT Wordle really free?
Yes. The daily puzzle has no paywall. The Wordle Archive and full WordleBot analysis are subscriber features, but the core game is free.
Can NYT Wordle answers repeat?
Yes. Previously used answers can return to the rotation, although repeats are still uncommon because the answer list is large.
How many guesses do you get in NYT Wordle?
You get six guesses.
What is the difference between Wordle and Hard Mode?
The answer and six-guess limit are the same. Hard Mode requires you to reuse revealed green and yellow letters in later guesses instead of allowing unrelated test words.
